Sonic Youth, formed in 1981, was an American rock band based in New York City. The founding members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Lee Ranaldo remained together for the entire history of the band, with Steve Shelley rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke was also a member for a few years. Known for their experimental sound and use of alternative tunings, Sonic Youth became influential in the alternative and indie rock scenes. The band disbanded in 2011 after a 30-year career, leaving behind a legacy of innovative music.
